One can pick up demons from persons and places.
Some of them may be like an insect, a spider, a roach, others a mouse or rat, a mangy cat or dog.
Or a snake.
Be careful where you go. Make sure you have the shield of faith.
And the helmet of salvation.
Carry the sword. (Read and reread Ephesians 6.)
For when spirits are on us, they can grow large; they can wrap around; they can squeeze.
We carry them as a burden. Or battle them. They can be Darth Vader.
And what they squeeze are the joy and life from us.
How often do we consider that they might be there when there is discord, anxiety, depression, anger, division. You can pick something up just entering a store or walking on a street. (Below, from a recent trip to New York, an apt metaphor for such a burden:)
It’s the suddenness that often offers clues.
You can tell they might be around when there is a sudden shift in thoughts.
When there’s a precipitous drop in mood (especially if it’s for no good reason).
When there is sudden tension. Suspicion.
Or “smotheredness”—a situation in which you struggle for breath (mepahorically but sometimes literally). Also, paranoia and false accusations.
What to do?
Number one is growing sensitive to when they’re around. It’s prayer with love that sensitizes us, that lifts spiritual blinders and unveils the hidden world.
Then, cast suspected spirits off. Helpful in doing this: reading the Bible.
Be strong. Command them away. Stop that first niggling thought, that first little upsetting notion, that dart or arrow from the enemy.
Stop them before they become a torrent, before there are too many to bounce off your armor, your escutcheon. The Bible must be held in front of you as a shield.
Importantly, we learn from the Book of Jude what to say and how to say it:
“The Lord rebuke you, Satan (in the Name of Jesus)!”
Too often, we neglect to cast them away before they wiggle their way in.
Too often, we allow them to upset a situation where no upset was ever warranted or necessary.
