We have long expressed concern, sometimes alarm, over the way humans are trying to rearrange God’s Creation, as if what He made isn’t good enough.
It started small: with the creation of hybrid seeds, such that we now have seedless grapes, plump tomatoes, picturesque ears of corn, perfect apples, and other vegetables. In fact, rare is the supermarket vegetable or fruit that in some way does not present a modified version of its original self (or, because two fruits or two vegetables are often interbred, themselves).
Did you know that the bananas we are all familiar with are actually a man-made hybrid between the Musa acuminata and the Musa balbisiana species? The first doesn’t taste too good, and the second contains way too many seeds, so humans took the best of both worlds about 10,000 years ago.
Meddling goes way back. And may be fine, when nature isn’t breached; when interbreeding occurs without a change in primary structures.
One of the most consumed fruits in the world, the orange wasn’t always what it is today. It is actually a crossbreed between the mandarin and the pomelo, most likely tracing back to Southern China.
Tomatoes were originally tiny green or yellow fruits used by the Aztecs in cooking. But after extensive selective breeding, they grew in size, becoming the tomatoes we’re familiar with today, notes Bleumag.
Broccoli, carrots, peanuts.
That’s not our concern. The concern is what we are doing today to fundamentally alter organisms, making hybridization of old pale by comparison.
We don’t just split two seeds and couple them, or graft a branch onto a different tree: We are altering actual DNA.
And the consequences of this may be disaster. Will we one day unleash a “Frankenfruit,” or an unstoppable bacteria (or virus — if we haven’t already)?
It’s a funny thing, how, not to play on words, playing with His Creation bears bad fruit. What is artificial usually leads to chronic health consequences (including cancer).
Let God be God.
Our hubris!
There was “Dolly” the cloned sheep (which died young due to a myriad of problems).
There are dogs, cats, and pigs that glow under a blacklight because their genomes have been injected with bio-luminescent genes from jellyfish and fireflies.
There are now babies with the DNA of three parents. Said a report from Ukraine — and listen to the language! — “Doctors at the Nadiya Clinic in Kiev, which created her baby, arranged for Tamara to become the first mother of a ‘three-parent baby’ to give an interview to a journalist.” Doctors who “created her baby.”
The doctors would fertilize one of her eggs with her husband’s sperm. Next, they would use her husband’s sperm to fertilize an egg from another woman paid to donate eggs. And then the scientists would remove most of the DNA from the other woman’s fertilized egg, and replace it with Tamara’s and her husband’s. To our great shame, this has also been done so gays can become “parents.”
Some of it is more amusing than anything.
Most recently, and very much in the news, is what they now called a “sturddlefish.” It’s part American paddlefish and Russian sturgeon, a hybrid concocted (by Hungarian scientists) by accidentally combining sperm and eggs in a lab. (The paddlefish is the “father.”)
Does God smile, frown, laugh, weep?
You probably have heard or even seen a “liger” — the result of breeding a lion with a tiger (creating the world’s largest cat; we saw one recently that is more than nine hundred pounds!).
What about a “zonkey” (zebra and donkey)?
At least they actually bred. We’ll take that over direct genetic manipulation.
When we get into real danger is when scientists fool around inserting human genes into those of animals, such that there are mice with some human brain cells, and such that scientists predict creation of a “humanzee” (human and chimp), and have even held a conference at Stanford University to discuss its “rights,” if it actually comes to be (drawing of hypothetical creature below, left). Some say it can’t happen genetically. We hope so.
The first stable human-animal “chimeras” (as they call them) were first created by Shanghai Second Medical University scientists in 2003, the result of having fused human cells with rabbit eggs. That is an outright travesty. One wonders if in secret labs they have gone further.
In 2010 came a “word of knowledge” we posted (part of the “1990” series) said in part, “The world is now seriously out of conformance with the Will of God and what He created and intended. There are those who would reconfigure the very creatures He has formed, and who meddle with the texture of life. For this reason, the Lord will allow a huge reorientation. If not for the action of Heaven, what God has created on earth will soon be damaged beyond recovery. A very dramatic effect already is in progress as regards the support structures of what man calls nature. Such cannot be allowed to take the final realization of total realignment when it comes to the very way elements and life forces interact. The event to come will surprise everyone who has offered a prognostication, and will show even recalcitrant scientists, though not all, that there is a fundamental alarm in Heaven over their arrogant and wayward course. Nothing that is artificial in a way that disrupts what God intended will be allowed to stand.”
It added:
“Heed this too: the politics of denial will be struck as with a plague.”
As far as the mice, not to worry: “ethical” scientists have stipulated that any such rodent that shows human traits must be immediately destroyed.
Why doesn’t that seem very reassuring?
