Dear Kamala Harris:
Excuse the businesslike tone of this note, but there are serious “business” issues.
First and foremost: are you willing, as your running mate Joseph Biden did Saturday night, in his “victory” speech (many are waiting until final official certification), to commit to serving as vice president for all Americans, including us conservative Catholics?
It is a critical question, due to your past.
We are aware, for example, that as a U.S. senator, you worked to stymie the appointment of a federal judicial appointee in Nebraska because he was a member of the pro-life Knights of Columbus. That seemed to be your litmus test. You also gave Amy Barrett a tough time when you questioned her during hearings about her appointment to the Supreme Court.
We are also aware that as attorney general of California, you ordered an armed raid on the home of David Daleiden, of the Center for Medical Progress.
His “crime”? Documenting Planned Parenthood’s illegal and abhorrent sale of tissue and organs from aborted babies.
You didn’t go after Planned Parenthood. No — you went after this fellow who was simply exposing an especially grotesque evil.
We have no idea if Daleiden is a practitioner of our Faith. He described his upbringing as that of a “cultural Catholic.” It doesn’t matter: he is against abortion and so are the conservative Catholics who rightfully fear you will suppress us, as did the Barack Obama Administration (of which of course your running mate, who professes to Catholicism, was a part).
You also were an enthusiastic advocate of a legislative act in California that forced pro-life pregnancy centers to inform clients as to where they could obtain free abortions. You helped put six Catholic hospitals out of business.
You supported, we must add, legislation that would force Catholic hospitals to perform transgender operations! Thank God that legislation has not held up. Meanwhile Mr. Biden was on the opposite side of Little Sisters of the Poor when they sought exemption from rules that would force them to act against their own professed beliefs!
Now, granted, there is not necessarily any direct evidence that you are specifically anti-Catholic. You are better described as “conservative-Christian unfriendly” — very. This is extremely disturbing to those of us who recall the government’s moves under Obama to force for instance a Christian baker to make a cake for a gay couple, despite the baker’s Christian views.
That is a stripping away of religious freedom, clear and simple, and it was and is chilling. It can’t be tolerated.
Is this going to continue as vice president — and, perhaps, in the future, as president, should you ever assume that office?
Will the incoming administration try to declare moral maxims “hate crimes”? Will you try to stop us from quoting Genesis 19, Leviticus 18, Judges 19, 1 Kings 14, Romans 1, 1 Corinthians 6, 1 Timothy 1, and Jude 7?
If so, you will be opposed at every turn.
The Bible is the Bible.
We are aware that abortion is not the only “life” issue. In fact, we conservatives can be criticized for limiting it solely to that. Pollution by way of toxicants in our water, air, and food may kill as many or more than abortion, and we Catholics have been very negligent about addressing it. We also realize handling health care and viruses and the like are matters of “pro-life.” Materialism, harshness, coarse language, sexual impropriety, selfishness, rancor, and anger are not Christian, and they are exhibited on all sides.
But the question, Mrs. Harris, is between you and us Catholics.
Kamala: are you going to commit to what Mr. Biden allegedly does — to being there fairly for all people (if there are not successful court challenges to the election)? Or are you going to come after us as vice president — all Christians, or at least all pro-lifers — as in the past?
