From Providence Journal:
Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, will host “a day of prayer and penance” on Sept. 14 to recognize the “anger, pain and confusion” that many Catholics are experiencing over the revelations of sexual abuse of minors by priests and the extensive cover-up by the Catholic Church.
He will also undergo a 24-hour fast beginning at 8 a.m. on Sept. 14, “in penance for my own faults and failures as a Christian, priest and bishop, as well as for the sins and failures of all priests and bishops related to the sexual abuse of minors,” he wrote in a press release sent on Thursday. A scathing grand jury report was released earlier this month detailing a cover-up by Catholic Church officials of decades of child abuse by over 300 priests in Pennsylvania. Between 1992 and 1996, Tobin served as auxiliary bishop of Pittsburgh, one of the six dioceses covered in the report.
