Have you ever heard of “sigils”?
If not, join the club.
It seems, however, that they can play a role (allegedly) in spiritual warfare.
A sigil is a symbol created and used in various magical or esoteric traditions to represent a specific intention, spiritual entity, or desire. The word sigil comes from the Latin sigillum, meaning “seal.” In the occult context, it functions as a kind of spiritual shorthand, embedding meaning into a visual form.
In traditional grimoire magic (occult textbooks, e.g., The Lesser Key of Solomon), sigils were symbolic signatures of angels, demons, or spirits. Each spirit had a unique sigil, supposedly revealed through divine or supernatural means. These were often used in rituals to summon or invoke the being whose sigil was inscribed.
Here are some examples (the Lord rebuke them, in the Name of Jesus!).
One assumes there are simpler ones. And there are.
Can demons inscribe them into the flesh of those they possess or oppress?
Broadcaster Tucker Carlson claimed he was “physically mauled” by a demon while asleep in bed. According to Carlson, the attack left him with bleeding “claw marks” on his sides and shoulder that he says are still visible (though he doesn’t show them; below is a podcast re-creation).
A demonic creature often is described as having claws, so this was not actually a “sigil.”
Some legends and folk tales speak of “marks of the beast,” “witch’s marks,” or bodily signs of demonic pact.
But how about tattoos?
Here there are copious examples, both intentional and unintentional.
Here’s an intentional one (the Lord rebuke you Satan!)
And another:
As for unintentional ones: any image that represents evil, even if tattooed as a matter of a trend (as opposed to actual occultism) can nonetheless cause problems: can draw down or in dark energies.
And among bikers?
Says one site that features them: “Demon tattoos are rich in symbolism and can represent a variety of themes and emotions. These tattoos can symbolize darker aspects of human nature such as evil, revenge, and deceit, reflecting inner turmoil or a rebellious spirit.
“They can also convey themes of power and strength, highlighting a person’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity.
“Besides traditional images of devils and demons, they often feature skulls, skeletons, and ghosts, evoking a sense of death and the supernatural.
“These tattoos are popular among young people who want to express the more complex and rebellious aspects of their personalities.”
Let us not dwell on these but expose the darkness so prevalent today (whereby tattoos are so prevalent) and pray against any attendant spirits. One exorcist we consulted says most tattoos (as long as they are not of the devil or something otherwise dark) carry no negative force.
But also, tattoos may be a spiritual issue period, no matter what they are. So use of Holy Water on them (if you have one) is advised.
Not paranoia, not fear, but prayer. (And removal if feasible.) Not even religious ones are advised.
If an actual sigil: make the Sign of the Cross and stay away.
For as it says in Leviticus (19:28): “You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.”
