It’s always been a sore point, in the domain of prophecy.
Perhaps better said, a big question:
Does any alleged seer or mystic or prophet of whatever ilk or faith really know dates and times for future events?
An end of an era, okay. But the end of the world? Who could know that?
When it comes to both, the answer is right there in Scripture, including today’s (11/26) reading:
“While some people were speaking about
how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings,
Jesus said, ‘All that you see here—
the days will come when there will not be left
a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.’
“Then they asked Him,
‘Teacher, when will this happen?
And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?”’
He answered, ‘See that you not be deceived,
for many will come in my name, saying,
“I am he,” and “The time has come.”
Do not follow them!
When you hear of wars and insurrections,
do not be terrified; for such things must happen first,
but it will not immediately be the end.”
Then He said to them,
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues
from place to place;
and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky'” (Luke 21:5-11)
Mighty signs from the sky. Take heed.
And a reading earlier this month?
“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
“‘And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’ with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.
“‘Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, at the gates. Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
“‘But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in Heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father'” (Matthew 24).
(At least until He ascended), not even Jesus!
