From Associated Press:
The slow-rolling storm system named Henri was expected to continue drenching the Northeast with rain Monday with a slated turn to the east from upstate New York back through New England.
The National Weather Service in Boston said torrential downpours and renewed flooding were possible, and there was a chance for brief tornados. The storm, now a tropical depression, was expected to dump another 1 to 3 inches of rain, as its center moves through Massachusetts. Flood warnings were in effect Monday morning for parts of northern New Jersey and southeastern New York state, and flood watches stretched throughout southeastern Pennsylvania, parts of Vermont and New Hampshire and New York City.
[Previous report]:
It’s out there in Manorville, New York, in eastern Long Island, near the opulent, celebrity-laden Hamptons:
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Island.
Most have never heard of it. It’s not far from a shore that is now under threat of surge from a hurricane.
So it is that now the Blessed Lady stands ready to assist in the same way she does New Orleans under the title “Our Lady of Prompt Succor” (see prayer at bottom) and in Florida at a shrine in Key West called Saint Mary Star of the Sea.
Here is the “Prompt Succor” prayer for those in New England and on the island. Forty-two million people are under hurricane or tropical-storm warnings.
Make no mistake: this storm is likely to land or quickly become just that: a tropical storm, not a full-flown, high-category cyclone, like the ones in Louisiana and Florida.
No.
But it could plow much ocean water over those exclusive dunes, as well as lesser ones to the west, and it could circle in a way that pushes water from Long Island Sound onto the North Shore and the beaches of Connecticut, then up to Nantucket Island, if just circumstances evolve as forecast (a significant “if”).
Meanwhile, heavy downpours inland will build rivers and creeks to crests from Long Island to New Jersey and up through Connecticut, where massive oaks are always in danger during substantial winds. The potential for flash floods, especially in smaller New Jersey communities to the northwest, is significant, and effects will be seen up the Hudson all the way to Albany and east through Massachusetts. Will it be a slow-moving, churning storm? If so, that slow movement will be the big story.
Much of Rhode Island and Massachusetts are on the right side of the circulation, which typically present the most cutting, dangerous winds.
Prayer needs here indeed.
Few expect a repeat of Hurricane Sandy, which was more powerful and struck south of New York City, but it is impossible to foresee inland flooding. Power outages, even if the storm wobbles and suddenly weakens, which happens with these lower-category cyclones (pray God), are inevitable.
Few realize there was once a small spit of land off the Rockaways in Queens called Hog Island that was washed over in a storm on August 24 in 1893 and within years disappeared. With a restaurant, a hotel, showgirls, and gambling, it had been a playground for the wealthy and Tammany Hall politicians.
That storm too was a Category One. And the Hamptons, the height of worldliness, and rich even by the standards of the rich, are a mega-version of Hog Island, in the gossip columns constantly this time of year (most recently, an exclusive party thrown by mega-musician Paul McCartney) and now prone to angry waves.
Nearby is also Fire Island, a notorious gathering hub with a gay reputation.
Meanwhile, in Manhattan, they had to halt is huge concert in Central Park celebrating the “return” to normalcy. It was called “We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert.” Playing at the event: a group called “Earth, Wind, and Fire.”
Will we never learn?
It is at the shrine on Long Island that Ned Dougherty, recipient of a famous near-death experience, claims to have had experiences with the Blessed Mother (as “Our Lady of Light”).
And so to Our Lady of the Island do we pray.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[Footnote: Ned Dougherty claimed prophecies and seemed correctly to predict the terrorist attacks of September 11, and foresees great danger from China. If there is not a radical conversion — and a great proliferation of prayer groups — he foresees events that will affect both coasts. He says he was shown terrific ocean surges in Manhattan, on Long Island, and in Florida (at a bridge he believes is that span between the mainland and Key Biscayne). We met Ned at Our Lady of the Island Shrine. We have no idea what to make of some of his other prophecies. He says the Blessed Mother warned of terrorism in Italy, the Middle East (this has certainly come to pass), and of great danger posed by China. His more recent prophecies we are not familiar with. Like any seer, the messages should be only cautiously discerned.]

Amen.”
