With “gay” issues and now “transgender” ones dominating the news, curiosity dictates a question: just how many such folks are there?
The percentage of Americans who identify as homosexual can vary depending on the source and methodology of the survey.
However, recent surveys and studies typically find that about four to five percent of the U.S. population identifies as homosexual. The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, which conducts research on sexual orientation, gender identity law, and public policy, has published estimates based on various surveys and analyses.
As of an update in April 2023, their estimates suggest that approximately 0.6% of adults in the United States, or about 1.4 million adults (out of 340 million), identify as transgender.
According to a 2022 Gallup poll, approximately 7.1% of adult Americans identify as “LGBT.” How many are male and how many female (lesbians)? The poll does not provide a breakdown of the number of people who identify as lesbians specifically.
Studies from several nations, including the U.S., conducted at varying time periods, have produced a statistical range of 1.2 to 6.8 percent of the adult population identifying as LGBT .
It’s important to note that these statistics are estimates and may not be entirely accurate. And of course, however large or small a number, that should have nothing to do with someone with love and mercy. (But for this we are changing the character of public restrooms?)
Here are the LGBT figures by state:
Other movements in the recent past have been somewhat-to-far higher in number.
There was the Civil Rights movement.
Today, there are more than forty-five million blacks in the U.S., or 13.5 percent.
There was the feminist movement.
A bit over half (50.4 percent) of the American populace is female, or 163 million.
As for religion:
Roughly 48.9% of Americans are Protestants (which include evangelicals), 23.0% or about a quarter are Catholics, 2.4 percent are Jews, 1.8% are Mormons, and 0.8 percent are Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Meanwhile, how many unborn are killed each year?
In the U.S., 636,000, according to CDC, and about 930,000, according to the more extensive Guttmacher Institute figures, or — for this truly persecuted minority — just under a million.
