Like many modern vaccines, a number of common products sold in local supermarkets or at pharmacies have been developed and/or tested with the assistance of memorialized fetal cell lines — and are therefore linked, however indirectly, to abortions that occurred decades ago.
Among those on recent lists are or have been: Nestlé’s refrigerated coffee creamers (as well as its instant soups, ketchup, and Maggi seasonings), Decouverte cosmetics, Neocutis’ anti-aging creams, Enbrel (for rheumatoid arthritis), Freezestorm, and — until it insisted that its taste-testing company, Senomyx, change its technique — Pepsi.
In Arkansas, a hospital is requiring those applying for a covid vaccine religious exemptions to sign a form attesting that they will also cease any use of aspirin, Tylenol, Pepto Bismol, Motrin, Tums, Benadryl, ibuprofen, and other products — though we could find no proof that connected these particular items with troublesome cell lines.
“No foods have fetal cells in them,” notes Human Life International, “but some foods have artificial flavors tested on the aborted fetal cell line HEK-293” (an immortalized cell line derived from an aborted fetus or human embryonic kidney cells grown in a tissue culture taken from that unborn female child in 1973.) Adds the organization: “Unlike foods, some cosmetics do contain the cells of aborted babies in them.”
As you can see here, one company dealing in the cell line makes no secret of it. “Cell line: HEK293 (Human embryonic kidney cell line),” says its website. “Growth media: RPMI and 10% FBS (Fetal bovine serum).”
“To non-scientists, this may sound a bit strange, but the reality is that HEK 293 cells are widely used in pharmaceutical research, helping scientists create vaccines as well as drugs like those for rheumatoid arthritis,” says a website called Politifact. “The difference here is that Senomyx’s work for Pepsi is one of the first times the cells have (potentially) been used to create a food or beverage.”
Their use in the development of medications — including medications for health issues as anemia and cystic fibrosis — includes the now widely-used Regeneron monoclonal treatments for Covid-19.
Notes a website called Children of God, which has stood as a watchdog over such cell use, “It was developed and tested with the HEK-293T aborted fetal cell lines according to Regeneron’s publication in Cell journal. Another preprint paper in collaboration with Regeneron describes the use of Freestyle 293 cells in the production of REGN10933 and REGN10987. We have not been able to verify whether this same production process is used in manufacturing.”
Fetal cell lines also have been used in the development of vaccines for certain coronavirus vaccines; chickenpox; rubella (in the common “MMR” combination); hepatitis; rabies; shingles; and polio — though this is not true of every brand for such health issues. For example, a new shingles vaccine, Shingrix, has no such association.
“The idea that companies like Pepsi and Kraft were using aborted fetuses as flavor additives was popularized by an article on the infamously pseudoscientific site Natural News in 2015,” argues the Office for Science and Technology at Canada’s prestigious McGill University. “They wrote that some processed foods contained ‘various flavoring agents manufactured using the tissue of aborted human babies.’
“Strictly speaking, this isn’t a lie. But it is a misrepresentation. Senomyx, an American biotechnology company develops flavor enhancers for use in food products. To test these enhancers, they used taste receptors expressed in the HEK 293 cell line, which was generated from the kidney cells of a fetus aborted in 1973,” but do not find their way into the products themselves.
Still, the moral/spiritual link is difficult for many Christians.
Fortunately, no flu vaccines produced this year involved fetal cells in any part of development or production. They are used for cultures in the development, testing, and production of the Johnson and Johnson and AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccines, as well as others. Pfizer and Moderna used them solely in the development and testing processes.
