In his high priestly prayer in John 17, he asks that his followers not be taken out of the world, but kept from the “evil one” while they remain in it. He tells his disciples they are the “light of the world,” intended to influence the surrounding environment for good. Finally, he offers a concluding perspective on the world’s power in John 16:33: “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
